Dr. Donna Goione Merchant

Dr. Goione Merchant is an Educational Audiologist, Certified Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing and Certified Teacher of the Handicapped. She obtained her Doctorate in Audiology from the University of Florida and has been practicing in the field of Audiology for more than 29 years. Prior to entering the field of Audiology, Dr. Goione Merchant taught high school special education classes. She has taught as an Adjunct Professor at Trenton State College (The College of New Jersey) and Montclair State University and currently holds a position as an Assistant Professor at Montclair State University in the Graduate Speech Pathology and Audiology Programs. Dr. Goione Merchant teaches the Auditory Processing Disorders course to the doctoral level students. As an Educational Audiology Consultant, Dr. Goione Merchant has worked with several school districts across the state of New Jersey providing training, in-services, classroom acoustic evaluations, workshops and IEP consultations. She has lectured nationally and locally on auditory topics for more than twenty years. Dr. Goione Merchant performs all of the Central Auditory Process testing at E.A.R.

Educational Audiologic services include:

Personal FM/DM, Sound Field, and CADS evaluations-service-implementation including system determination and verification, in-services and, technological equipment services.

Audiologic report review and interpretation/consultation. ​​

Educational Audiology consultations are provided throughout school districts as well as for the out-of-district placements for the district students as needed.
Educational Audiologist Consultant
An Educational Audiologist can provide multiple services for the students and the school districts. This would include organizing an Audiological management program that addresses a School’s needs
PLANNING, COORDINATION AND PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
Organize an audiological management program that addresses the School’s needs to include:

Management of students with hearing loss and Central Auditory Processing Disorders diagnosed in district
-
Interpretation of Audiological reports
-
Coordinating all personal FM/DM equipment for Hearing Impaired students and students with Central Auditory Processing Disorders
-
Monitoring and troubleshooting hearing aid function, cochlear Implant function, BAHS function
-
Knowledge of test data, along with educational, psychological and other relevant medical data to make a diagnosis and make appropriate recommendations to the Child Study Team
-
Participation in IEP meetings with knowledge of IDEA laws and classification eligibilities
-
Liaison between clinical based audiologists and the school including interpretation of reports/records with explanations/clarifications to school personnel
-
Contact with the clinical audiologists to review school concerns and needs of the children for school equipment, intervention, etc.

In-services and workshops as needed on auditory related topics to faculty and staff
-
Management of Audiological equipment throughout the district and out of district placements
FOLLOW UP/LIAISON RESPONSIBILITIES
Make recommendations regarding the need for further audiological or other support services:

Assisting with the coordination of Otological services as needed
-
Assisting with recommendations in regards to placement and assessment services for classified children

Providing liaison services designed to effect comprehensive student services
EVALUATION
Schedule appointments for audiological evaluations:

Administering standard and specialized diagnostic audiometric tests and procedures in keeping with individual student needs

Promoting effective interpersonal relations with students and parents
-
Obtaining additional/supplementary diagnostic records

Formulating conclusions and recommendations

Interpreting diagnostic information
