Evaluating Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD):

The evaluation of CAPD is an extended auditory evaluation that examines how an individual processes incoming auditory messages as well as the way they use information. Tasks are both linguistically and low-linguistically based to determine if there are difficulties with basic auditory acoustic information in comparison to difficulty processing more language based auditory input.   Although many disciplines can screen for CAPD, the audiologist is the professional that is recognized for differential diagnosis of CAPD.

What should I expect during the evaluation?

  • Testing for CAPD includes a test battery comprised of auditory tasks designed to examine specific auditory skills.  The test includes auditory tasks that are delivered either to one ear at a time or to both ears at the same time.

    • Words

    • Sentences

    • Tonal patterns

  • Presentations are in three general conditions:

    • Monaural for individual ear responses

    • Dichotic for bilateral responses to competing messages

    • Diotic for binaural responses to one message at a time

  • Task responses are then analyzed further to determine specific patterns of responses based on potential higher order complications and/or interaction with coexisting diagnoses (e.g.; ADHD, Specific Language Impairment, ASD, etc.).

  • The presentations are either in sequences or have been distorted or broken up between the ears. The individual is asked to put this information back together and repeat it.

  • The testing takes approximately 1 to 2 hours depending on the individual with breaks taken as needed.

  • An initial interview intake is performed prior to the testing to obtain as much background information as possible.

  • A full report is provided.

    • Generating a report takes approx. 6-8 weeks

  • All reports are prepared with available background history information, including any multi-disciplinary reports that have been completed.

    • It is highly recommended that any information defining the individual’s learning profile be made available for consideration.  This would include Child Study Team evaluation reports, multidisciplinary reports (e.g.: Neurological, Neuropsychological, Speech/Language), and medical reports.

  • Impact information is proved in the report to help the reader and communication environment.

  • Correlation is also made within the entire students learning profile between the auditory issues and any additional presenting academic learning or neurological indicators.
